Below, you'll find a more detailed description of each of the levellers abilities and powers. Which one of them would be a match for you?

Level 1 Boy

  • AF1&2 – With help I can do different styles of writing eg list, label, story and try to include basic information.
  • AF3 – I try to put actions in sequence and can use famous phrases such as ‘once upon a time’ and ‘the end’.
  • AF4&5 - I can link ideas and join them by use of ‘and’.
  • AF6 - I try to use full stops and capital letters.
  • AF7 – I use familiar words in my writing.
  • AF8 – I sound out new words and make sure that I write down each sound.
  • Handwriting – I put spaces between my words.

Level 2 Man

  • AF1&2 – I try to use correct features for different styles of writing and include mostly relevant information.
  • AF3 – I am trying to make opening and closings clear and to make a sequence my ideas eg using time words and phrases.
  • AF4 – I group different ideas into sections and link some by use of pronouns.
  • AF5 – I can use past and present tenses correctly and try to start sentences in different ways.
  • AF6 - I am brilliant with capital letters, full stops and question marks.
  • AF7 – I try to use new words.
  • AF8 – I am usually great at spelling the high frequency words and use all my phonic skills to write all the sounds in words that I don’t know.
  • Handwriting – I clearly form my ascenders and descenders.

Miss Level 3

  • AF1&2 – I try to include some extra information in my writing and use the correct style to try and make the reader interested.
  • AF 3 – I usually make my openings and closings clear, put related points together and have a good logical sequence to my writing.
  • AF4 – I try to use paragraphs and link ideas within each paragraph although movement between them may not ‘flow’.
  • AF5 – I confidently use ‘and but and so’ to join sentences and try to vary how I write the sentences.
  • AF6 – I am a whizz with full stops, exclamation and question marks and try to use commas and speech marks.
  • AF7 – I try to use new words for effect!
  • AF8 – I cleverly use my phonic skills to write all the letter strings in words which contain 2 or more.
  • Handwriting – I try to join my well formed handwriting.

Level 4 Girl

  • AF1&2 – I aim to make the purpose of my writing clear and am becoming more confident with including some fine detail, eg by using adverbial and expanded noun phrases.
  • AF3 – I cluster related points, making good use of appropriate sequence with fitting openings and closings.
  • AF 4 – I structure my paragraphs to elaborate on ideas and aim to link my paragraphs together.
  • AF5 – I try to use subordinating connectives in all my writing eg if, when, because
  • AF6 – I am becoming an expert with most punctuation and am learning to use commas in clauses.
  • AF7 – I use lots of new words which are related to the topic.
  • AF8 – I am great at writing words with 3 or more letter strings and can spell a huge range of sight words correctly!

Captain Level 5

  • AF1&2 – I try to include imaginative detail where appropriate and think very carefully about what each type of writing needs to try and capture the reader’s interest.
  • AF3 – I use paragraphs to clearly link my ideas. Within my closings I refer back to my openings.
  • AF4 – My paragraphs clearly structure main ideas and links between paragraphs are maintained across the whole text!
  • AF 5 – I am great with using a connectives which clarify the relationship between each other eg on the other hand, although, meanwhile.
  • AF6 – I am skilful in my use of punctuation and try to be ambitious with my sentence structures.
  • AF7 – I use and experiment with a wide range of vocabulary.
  • AF8 – I am a whizz at spelling words and am really trying with those which contain graphemes that you can’t hear!

The Mighty Level 6

  • AF1&2 – I can confidently write for different purposes and experiment with the content and how I can adapt information for different audiences.
  • AF3 – My writing is carefully controlled depending on the needs of the reader eg paragraphs of different lengths; flashback anticipating the reader’s questions.
  • AF4 - Paragraphs are used to clearly structure my writing making it easy for the reader to skim read and identify purpose and content.
  • AF5 – I cleverly vary the length of my sentences for impact within my writing.
  • AF 6 – My punctuation is almost always perfect, and is nearly always perfect when I use ambitious sentence structures.
  • AF7 – I try to skilfully engage the reader with varied and ambitious vocabulary.
  • AF8 – My spelling is usually perfect.

Lady Level 7

  • AF1&2 – I am imaginative in writing for different purposes and take well judged risks with my stylised writing eg direct address to the reader or taking the reader into my confidence.
  • AF3 – I skilfully use a variety of devices to position the reader to exactly where I want them!
  • AF4 – I skilfully craft my paragraphs, eg matching the length depending on narrative pace or development of an argument. My paragraphing is integral to the meaning and purpose.
  • AF5&6 – I am a master at using a variety of sentence types across all my writing to achieve purpose and effect.
  • AF7– I confidently experiment with using a wide range of exciting and imaginative vocab.
  • AF8 – My spelling is perfect throughout my writing.
